Louise ignored Audrey’s pointed stares and heavy sighs all the way back to Magnolia House. ‘If you don’t need me for anything else I fancy an early night. It’s been a long day.’

‘I’ll be perfectly fine. Rose Ann asked me to stop in to see her when we got back. She wants to hear all about the evening.’

I’m sure you’ll enjoy giving her every gruesome detail including the part where her grandson thumped the husband of his ex-girlfriend. And when I left without staying to help him. ‘I’m going down to make a cup of tea. Would you care for some?’

‘No, thank you, dear. I believe there’s a particularly fine brandy on my horizon to round off an eventful evening.’

Louise’s cheeks burned. ‘Good night.’ She hurried away before Audrey could start on her again.

‘The kettle’s boiled. I hoped you might head this way.’ Josh’s laconic voice startled her the moment she stepped into the kitchen.

‘Oh. What are you doing here?’

He raked her with his amused gaze. ‘I live here. Did you forget?’

How could I?

‘You’ll be relieved to hear the police didn’t get involved and Will Harding walked out of Tootsie’s under his own steam with his adoring wife on his arm.’ He dangled a tea bag in front of her face. ‘Do you need this?’

‘No thank you. We brought our own loose tea from England because Audrey won’t drink anything else.’ Being within touching distance of Josh the teasing hint of his familiar plain soap in the air affected her deeply. Everything about him was straightforward from his simple black T-shirt and sexy ripped jeans to his thick, short-cropped dark hair, given a bluish sheen by the florescent light. A woman got exactly what she saw with Josh.

‘I’m sorry, Louise.’ He opened his arms wide, cocking his head to one side with a quirky smile. ‘Am I forgiven?’

‘For what?’

‘Scaring you.’

‘I was afraid,’ she whispered and dropped her gaze away. ‘I know you’re tough and can defend yourself but I thought you’d badly hurt Ellen’s husband.’ Louise tripped over her words. ‘If the police took you away and I went back to England without seeing you again you’d never know …’ She dissolved into tears.

‘Don’t cry.’ Josh wrapped his arms around her in a tight bear hug, his voice breaking. ‘The toughness is only on the outside. I can’t stand it when anyone I love is hurtin’.’ Louise stared at him in shock.

‘Don’t freak out. I know what I said and I meant it but I was a complete mess when my cat got run over. I was only five and—’

‘Your cat?’

A whoosh of heat lit up his face. ‘Yeah, I mean I loved Daisy and … she turned out to be okay but there’s different sorts of love and—’

‘Stop there.’ She held up her hand. ‘You’re digging a deeper hole.’

‘Story of my life,’ Josh muttered half under his breath.

‘I’m going to bed. I need time to think about … all this.’ A mixture of natural caution and uncertainty held Louise back.
